PROFILE : NEIL BIRNIE

Lecture: Journeys in Wild Places
Thursday 19 October 2006
Tiso Outdoor Experience store
41 Commercial Street, Leith
This lecture is free to attend.

Neil Birnie is passionate about travelling and exploring the wild places of the world.

He has made countless trips to Africa, often trekking through the East African highlands with local Samburu Tribesmen.

As well as his adventures in Africa, Neil has, amongst many other destinations, journeyed through some of the most wild regions of Alaska. His experiences there include wilderness canoe journeys and some very close encounters with grizzly bears!

Inspired by his adventures and a strong desire to ensure that local communities benefit from tourism rather than suffer because of it, Neil co-founded specialist sustainable adventure travel company Wilderness Journeys, now Scotland's leading adventure tour operator and sponsor of the EMFF.

Come and hear Neil's story of how a passion for adventure led to an exciting new career at the forefront of eco-tourism. Neil will also describe some of the inspiring adventures now offered by Wilderness Journeys in some of the world's wildest places, from trekking in Bhutan to sea-kayaking in Norway's Lofoten Islands and explain how a sustainable approach by adventure travel companies can bring genuine benefits to local communities.

It should be an inspiring evening! Fr
ee tickets can be obtained from Tiso in advance or on the door.
