PROFILE : Catherine Destivelle
From
Boulders to Mountain Tops
|
Lecture: Catherine was introduced to climbing by her father at the age of five. On visits to the forest of Fontainebleau, she played on the boulders and a seed was sown. "When I tried rock-climbing, I was good at it straight away, so I liked it". In 1988, Destivelle climbed what was then the hardest route in the world ever climbed by a woman. Soon afterwards, her focus moved to mountaineering. She free-climbed the Nameless Tower in Pakistan and solo climbed the Bonatti Pillar on Les Drus. She then opened a new route up the famous west face of the Drus, during a remarkable 11-day solo-climb. Soloing hard mountaineering routes was now Catherine’s trademark, and she continued to make remarkable solo ascents on every continent, in all of the world’s great mountain ranges.
