EMFF 2009 opens with this special free to attend lecture, staged at EICA Ratho

Jonny Muir from Inverness likes a challenge. But sometimes challenges can be hard to find. Some people find them in the Himalayas, others on the open ocean. Some people even cycle around the world looking for theirs. A random comment in a pub helped Jonny find his challenge, right here in the UK.

Jonny's new book, Heights of Madness, is a travelogue about a 92 day journey through the UK's 92 historic counties, climbing the highest hill in each county and cycling over 5,000 miles between them along the way.

The summits include some of the UK's best-loved hills and mountains, such as Ben Nevis, Ben More Assynt, Snowdon, Scafell Pike and The Old Man of Coniston.

Note: We recommend reserving tickets in advance of the lecture. To reserve tickets, simply email the EMFF with your name and a note of how many tickets you require (max of 2 tickets per email).

Other less auspicious summits include a live MOD firing zone in Yorkshire, an 80m molehill in Huntingdonshire and a back garden in Kent.

While Heights of Madness celebrates the high (and not so high) places of the UK, the book aims to prove that our island can be as chaotic and challenging, yet as beautiful and brilliant, as anywhere on Earth.
