PROFILE : STEPHEN VENABLES
Higher Than The Eagle Soars

Lecture:
(Sunday 21 October - 7pm)

Stephen Venables, who is the current President of the Alpine Club, was the first Briton to climb Everest without supplementary oxygen. He reached the summit alone, after climbing with a small American-Canadian team, by a new route up the gigantic Kangshung Face.

Everest was a thrilling highlight in a career which has taken Stephen to many of the world's wildest places making first ascents of many previously unknown mountains. Stephen's first book, Painted Mountains, won the Boardman Tasker Prize.

His new autobiography, Higher Than the Eagle Soars, recounts his early adventures, culminating in his epic ascent of Everest. Stephen will lead us on a global mountaineering adventure recalling stories from climbs in Scotland, Tibet and on the Eiger.
